Nestled within the redwood forests of Monte Rio, northern California, sits Bohemian Grove, a 2,700-acre retreat owned by the exclusive gentlemen’s San Francisco Bohemian Club, founded in 1872.
Every summer, the retreat is frequented by the political and business elite of the US. Shrouded in secrecy, the activities at the grove have become the subject of countless conspiracy theories and rumours.
In 2000, Alex Jones, the founder of infowars, broke into the encampment in an attempt to ‘expose the new world order’ and filmed the Cremation of Care, a theatrical ceremony in which an effigy of the members’ 'worldly cares' is burnt.
Beyond inspiring a bizarre attack on Bohemian Grove by a masked vigilante calling himself the Phantom Patriot in 2002, the release of the video footage, set within an alarmist context, was instrumental in increasing Jones’ profile as a far-right activist and subsequently springboarded infowars to become an influential outlet of fake news in recent US politics.

Still of Alex Jones from Dark Secrets: Inside Bohemian Grove, dir. Alex Jones, InfoWars, 2000.
“Hello, I’m Alex Jones and I’m a radio and television host based in Austin, Texas. And for many years I’ve been exposing the criminal activities of the global elite, also known as the New World Order. In past films, we’ve documented the centralisation of power, the move towards world government; the attack on the nation-state; self-defence; the Second Amendment; family values, that is, the family itself, as well as private property rights.
Now I personally am a Christian, but even an atheist should be concerned about the information we’re about to bring forward in this new documentary film, Dark Secrets: Inside Bohemian Grove. You see, for over a 120 plus years in northern California, in Sonoma County, on a 2,700-acre secluded redwood grove, leaders from around the world, prime ministers, chancellors, presidents, governors, again, the heads of industry, banking, academia, the media, Hollywood – only a select few, a little over two thousand people – travel there to engage in bizarre ancient Canaanite, Luciferian, Babylonian mystery religion ceremonies.
Well I had to check it out myself. And I’m proud of my team, Mike Hanson, Violet Nichols, they travelled with me there, we talked to some of the locals discreetly, we successfully infiltrated, with the help of some of the locals and Channel 4, World of Wonder, British television that teamed up with us. And I successfully infiltrated, through the Secret Service, through the guards, through the Sonoma County sheriff’s department. We were inside for hours. That’s only one day out of the two weeks that they meet there for the admitted summer fire festival of the Bohemian Club.
Well, basically that’s enough for me. It’s hard to even describe it with words. And I hope that our hidden cameras can give you at least a small piece of what I witnessed. To have world leaders engaging in this type of sickening behaviour, oh yes there’s much more to come, mock human sacrifices... they claim, just shocks the foundations of what Americans believe their leaders to be.”

Mary: Feast for the eyes in here
Jon: Is this the office?
Mary: No, this is the 60’s room this is where all the 60’s, the who killed JFK and…
Jon: Is it dangerous to try and get into Bohemian Grove?
Mary: Well if you get caught, I mean in terms of life, no I don’t think so. But if you get caught you’d probably get arrested. I think they just quietly make them go away
Jon: There’s some people out there who say they quietly make them go away in a more sinister manner
Mary: Oh well, you know, theres a lot of stuff, especially like a lot of right wing stuff and all, oh we’ve had “There killing children up there and sacrificing them on the alter” we’ve heard that one a lot, I guess you have too. Um, you know I don’t know. Maybe they are but if that was happening I think we would know that here locally. I think it’s bad enough to just stick to what they are doing to the globe, earth and the people on it
Jon: It’s the secret room

Alex: Tomorrow, what time do they have the Cremation of Care, or the Owl ceremony?
Rick: That's typically right at dust. It'll start when it's still sort of light out and by the time it's over it's dark.
Alex: Have you ever witnessed that?
Rick: Uh Huh, Yeah.
Alex: What do they do?
Rick: There's a real large... it looks like probably a redwood tree that was cut off, and they've built things on top of that that get... you know, the first goes up and they do all these things. And then there's sort of a, I suppose a Druid type of ceremonial altar out in front of it that they do things at.
Alex: ..Druid ceremonial altar?
Rick: Well, it has that look about it - very odd, very pagan.
Alex: Why don't we just walk in here? (pointing to main entrance on the map)
Rick: There are going to be 1 or 2 guys, sitting by side of this road, in a camp chair, looking bored and uninterested. and you're just gonna say... just nod to them as you walk in. That's it.
Alex: How would you get in?
Rick: I'd walk in wearing this shirt and a pair of khakis, and I.. I'd just walk in, from Monte Rio.

Alex: We're just going to walk normally as we would, calmly, la la la and theres gonna be guyssitting there and we're, you know, we're fat cats. So let's go ahead.
(Both start walking across the 2nd floor decking)
Alex: But, uh seriously David, as fast as micro processors are starting to move its getting down to a molecular level, the questions is at what level will just the actual basics of science stop us from making these systems smaller. And I'm.. it's the entire nano-technology revolution that I find the most dynamic...
Mike: ...I agree.
(Both laughing)
Alex: (To Jon) Do ya like that?
Jon: (To Mike) Is that what you're planning to say, I agree?
Mike: I don't know, it just has to be natural when we do it, I don't think we should practice, you know, conversation I just think we should do it and what comes up comes up.
(Both walk back along the decking)
Alex: Alright here we go... (starts to walk) But I really wanna know your opinion of nanotechnology I mean you've been studying it so closely and you've already got these transistors down to the size of molecules, the question is - when will the science, just the basic laws, stop our progress in the miniaturisation process.... Doctor?
Mike: (Smiles) ....

Alex: Shh I'll be safe, don't worry about it guys come on
Violet: Be careful Mike
Mike: Yeah, pray for us, keep the evil off us.
Violet: Be careful.
(Alex and Mike jump into a bush and hike through the woods, 30 minutes later they emerge into the Bohemian Grove car park)
Alex: Let's walk on up here a second... (to the shuttle bus driver) when's the next shuttle coming?.. Cool thanks.
Mike: Well we're in
Alex: Well we are inside the Bohemian Grove, were actually not inside yet Mike..
Mike: Well, we're in the parking lot.
Alex: Yeah..

Great Owl of Bohemia, we thank thee for thy adjuration.
Well should we know our living flame
Of Fellowship can sear The grasping claws of Care, Throttle his impious screams
And send his cowering carcass
From this Grove.
Begone, detested Care, begone!
Once more we banish thee! Let the all potent spirit of this lamp
By its cleansing and ambient fire
Encircle the mystic scene
Hail Fellowship; begone Dull Care!
Once again Midsummer sets us free!

Violet: That's scary! God! They're wearing black robes. They're terrifying. How bizarre is that? A bunch of old men in black robes in the middle of nowhere.
Mike: They're worshipping.. like an Owl god.
Alex: Yeah, this is all pretty disgusting.
Jon: Mike, in a nutshell: Do you think that what you saw was unholy?
Mike: Well, it's very strange to me that these people are supposed to be running uh... so-called "America", and the world, and they're up there doing this?
Jon: Mike, you seem freaked out.
Mike: Oh I am. Well, I get so tired of these people telling lies to the people.. we know the Davidians so well, and I know that they're good people.. they're saying that Branch Davidians are cultists? Well, THIS looks like a cult to me! Look at them!
Alex: Mike is absolutely right though. These people point their fingers all day and call people extremists or cult members or whatever, for their religious beliefs. This was a pagan ceremony, worshipping the earth, and then engaging in human sacrifice; that is, mock human sacrifice.
Jon: Aren't they just saying that for 2 weeks, "We don't have to worry about anything"?

“A bumbling, hooded commando calling himself the "Phantom Patriot" invaded the fabled grounds of the Bohemian Grove during the weekend hoping for a shootout. What he got was a good night's sleep in a cot reserved for one of the club's captains of industry and a date with a prison psychologist. Richard McCaslin, 37, of Carson City, Nev., pleaded not guilty in Sonoma County Superior Court yesterday to five felony counts including arson, burglary and brandishing a weapon at a peace officer after he allegedly sneaked into the exclusive Russian River encampment carrying an arsenal of weapons. He told The Chronicle during a jailhouse interview that he went to the Monte Rio retreat Saturday night intent on exposing child abuse and human sacrifice and punishing the perpetrators.
But the well-spoken and seemingly lucid McCaslin is convinced that there are hidden torture chambers and other horrors at the club. He told how he was inspired by Austin, Texas, radio personality Alex Jones. Jones says he has seen "bizarre, Luciferian ceremonies" at the idyllic 2,000-acre redwood grove during the club's annual two-week summer encampment, which draws U.S. presidents and other luminaries."

Still of Alex Jones interviewing presidential candidate Donald Trump, from The Alex Jones Show,
2 December 2015
Monte Rio Cinema #5, 2019
Jack: Next year marks twenty years since you entered Bohemian Grove with Alex Jones. What do you think about what has happened since?
Jon: Well, the biggest change isn’t so much me, it’s Alex. I think Alex’s worldview has darkened a lot. His power has increased, his wealth has increased... he’s become a more malevolent person. That confluence of him becoming rich, more powerful; having Trump on his show, having Roger Stone on – that’s not funny. I mean, for somebody to have an extreme conspiratorial world-view, and then to have people in power actually, you know, be fellow travellers... What I’m saying is elitist: because I’m basically saying people like Alex shouldn’t have power... but people like Alex shouldn’t have power!
Jack: Am I right in thinking that you asked David Icke to join you in infiltrating Bohemian Grove first?
Jon: Yeah, that’s my memory...
Jack: How did you end up bringing Alex?
Jon: We met Alex at Waco. I’d gone to Waco with Randy Weaver. We were making a documentary about the siege of Ruby Ridge, because they were rebuilding David Koresh’s church. Bo Gritz was there, who was a huge figure in the conspiracy world at the time. I believe he was the inspiration for Rambo... Alex Jones was like twenty-six, and I think he was beginning to get a reputation among Austin hipsters, because as well as being a conspiracy theorist he was also an exceptionally good broadcaster, and still is. I had no doubt that Alex was gonna become a big star. What I never thought was that he would become powerful in a mainstream way. I remember somebody at Waco saying: ‘He’s twenty-six years old, by the time he’s thirty-six he’s got to be the president of the United States.’ And I thought, well a lot would have to go wrong for that to happen – and now he’s like, third in line to the throne.
Jack: I think Alex looks at Bohemian Grove as being the foundation that he built the rest of his career on.
Jon: I always think of Bohemian Grove as being like his Revolver, and 9/11 was his Sergeant Pepper.
Jack: Why do you think it is that people are so drawn to conspiracy theories? It’s interesting to think that typically they tend to be politically on the right.
Jon: Yeah. I’m wondering if there is a left version of a conspiracy theorist.
Jack: I’m sure there is.
Jon: Well, look at Mary at Bohemian Grove. I mean she’s a left-wing version of an anti-Bohemian Grove conspiracy theorist. Everybody likes mysteries. People say that it makes sense of a senseless world... I think people are drawn to conspiracies because our leaders sometimes behave in conspiratorial ways. So I think that also, there’s prejudice about Bohemian Grove and Bilderberg, and, you know, all of those groups; the Trilateral Commission and the Council on Foreign Relations, that are sort of interesting to right-wing conspiracy theorists. But I think there’s a certain element of, if not anti Semitism... there’s definitely a certain element of a template. It’s like, ‘We believe that there’s a secret room from which a shadowy cabal secretly controls the world. Now let’s go and look for things that will confirm that.’ It’s confirmation bias. You could argue – and I’m a bit worried about saying this – but let me just say it, and we’ll see how it sounds... You could argue that the way that some people on the hard-left take some decontextualised tweet, and work incredibly hard to destroy the person who wrote it is a form of a conspiracy theory in itself. Because it’s taking a sliver of somebody’s life, completely decontextualised. They’re not interested in context. They’re not interested in intention. You know, that in itself, plucking a fact out of the ether and giving it a meaning beyond what it deserves, is a kind of form of conspiracy theory.
Jack: It’s a good point and it somewhat relates to the act of sequencing photographs, in the sense that you remove those subjects from context.
Jon: Absolutely! So yeah, I’d say that conspiratorial thoughts, or, you know, confirmation bias, all the different sorts of psychological impulses... there’s a bunch of other disorders, or psychological quirks that feed into this, and I think those things are probably true for things like the way that the left like to publicly shame people. And the right too, of course!
Jack: The raid on Bohemian Grove was a pretty interesting story. When the Phantom Patriot broke into the Grove in 2001, it was off-season, so there was no-one there. Instead of fighting the Illuminati, he went into a nearby cabin and tried to set it on fire – but his matches wouldn’t work, and his torch ran out of batteries.
Jon: Was he armed?
Jack: Yes, with a shotgun, home-made mortar-device, handgun, crossbow and a machete...
Jon: God! I didn’t know as many of the details... I saw him on C-SPAN at the time. And somebody, I think Alex or Kelly [Violet], basically messaged me to say: ‘Don’t mention him again’
Jack: So, I found his [Alex Jones] studio in Austin...
Jon: That’s a good research job.
Jack: I knocked on the door, and within three seconds a security guard turned up and asked what I was doing. It was a Sunday afternoon, as I knew that was when he was recording his show. Mike Hanson had told him that I was coming, so I was trying to explain that I’m here to see Alex. The security guard told me that he had never even heard of an Alex Jones, and started laughing when I said that this warehouse was the location from which InfoWars broadcasts across the world. Then I looked up and saw a huge satellite dish on the roof of the building. The security guard couldn’t explain that, and insisted I leave.
Jon: Now Alex is the powerful secret one…

Donald: I just want to finish by saying your reputation is amazing. I will not let you down, you will be very, very impressed, and I think we will be speaking a lot. You’ll be looking at me in a year, or two years let’s say, give me a little bit of a time to run things, but a year into office and you’ll be saying, ‘Wow, I remember that interview. He said he was going to do it and he did a great job.’ You’ll be very proud of our country.
Alex: Well I’m impressed you’re saying you’re fully committed, you know, there’s no future and if don’t take this country back, Donald Trump. I hope you can help uncripple America. Thank you so much Sir, you will be attacked for coming on and we know you know that. Thank you.
Donald: Thank you very much.
